The European Social Marketing Conference 2012 marks a first culmination point on the European Social Marketing agenda. Within a year the European Social Marketing Association has been set up and organised its first conference. A success and a stepping stone for 2013.
In November 2012 the European Social Marketing Association in partnership with the World Social Marketing Conference and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) held its first conference, in Lisbon (Portugal).
The conference gathered around 100 Social Marketing academics and practicioners from more than 20 different European countries and celebrated the official launch of the European Social Marketing Association (ESMA). A line-up of great speakers from different scientific communities across Europe sparked new thoughts and intense discussions among the growing community of European social marketers.
Intense and thought provoking was especially a session presenting five different perspectives on trends and developments in social marketing, delivered by Christine Domegan, Gerard Hastings, Rebekkah Russel-Bennett, Jeff French and Suzanne Suggs and discussed by medium-sized regional clusters of all participants. Here, culture, language and scientific or practice background showed in different outcomes and votes on the presented hypotheses. Once again, the European community showed that its main challenge and main strength will lie in its diversity and how to unify these different needs under the umbrella of one organization.
One of the main achievements of ESMA’s first year activities, the conference therefore also offered ample opportunities for participants to connect, exchange and follow-up on the organisation’s current projects and prospects – a veritable idea hub and definitely a great success.
Following the 2012 conference ESMA is ready to proceed to the next steps: recruit members and volunteers for its task groups on Marketing, Communication and Knowledge Sharing as well as negotiate its future collaboration with ISMA.
The next European Social Marketing Conference will be held in 2014. International guests welcome!
