Social Issue: Excessive Alcohol Use
Social Marketing Strategy: Humor to Catch Attention
Where Sighted: New York Times Article
I understand this sighting is a bit of a stretch as a Social Marketing example, but just wanted to give you a smile with an unusual, but “eye catching”, example of increasing awareness of the social issue of excessive alcohol use. From the NYT By Victor Mather, Dec.3, 2025
“A raccoon broke into a liquor store the other day and drank his fill: rum, moonshine, even peanut butter whiskey. Then it passed out on the floor of the bathroom. The raccoon entered the ABC liquor store in Ashland, Va., through the ceiling early Saturday morning. “It wreaked havoc,” said Carol Mawyer, the public relations manager for Virginia ABC. “It broke several bottles and consumed the spirits.” In addition to the rum, moonshine and peanut butter whiskey, the raccoon also got into some vodka and — seasonally appropriate! — eggnog. If you have not tried it, peanut butter whiskey “is excellent,” Ms. Mawyer said. The raccoon apparently agreed.”
