Where Sighted: Evening Television News
Behavior: Safe Gun Storage
A shooting on April 17, 2025, on Florida State University’s campus in Tallahassee left two people killed and six others injured.
The gunman was reported to be a 20-year old FSU student, who was then shot by police on the campus and taken into custody.
The following CBS news clip reporting of this incident received my “applause”:
“According to Leon County Sheriff Walt McNeil, the 20-year-old man is the son of one of his deputies, saying his mother has been with the force for 18 years. . . The shooter used his mother’s former service weapon – now a personal handgun – which was found at the scene”, and further stated that this was “Not a surprise to us that he had access to weapons.”
Given the statistic that “Almost half of mass shooters stole the gun from a family member” I have advocated frequently for newscasters to report how the shooter accessed the gun, similar to when for car crashes it is often reported whether the driver’s blood alcohol level was above limits, and therefore the cause was likely DUI.
Safe storage will decrease gun deaths & injuries.
