Social Marketing Strategy: Say Something
Where Sighted: Cherry Blossom Festival at UW Campus
Behavior: Reach Out to Homeless People
I am currently writing a new book on Reducing Homelessness: A Social Marketing Approach. I began this journey in March, reviewing articles, reports, studies and more related to Homelessness behavior change strategies that work to motivate those at risk for homelessness, as well as those who are homeless, to engage in actions that will move them to permanent housing. One recommended strategy I personally engaged in this weekend at a Cherry Blossom festival was to approach homeless individuals and “say hello.” The picture below is the individual I approached.
I asked him what the “cat’s” name was, and he said
“It’s not my cat. It’s my bed.”
I asked him if he had considered or tried to live in a shelter.
“No.”
Why?
“They have too many bugs and my stuff wouldn’t be safe.”
I now know a major Barrier to write about.
