Social Issue: Increasing Recycling

A local TV news story this week featured a program of The Recycling Society, a nonprofit organization in the U.S. with a program influencing students in elementary schools to increase recycling. The program featured was one with a Focus on recycling aluminum cans, and a Motivator for students at each school to “win a contest” among elementary schools in their state in terms of the greatest number of aluminum cans the students were able to influence to be recycled.  The winning school receives a $500 prize, and “the kids who are participating are viewed as superheroes.”  As of the date of the newscast, the two competing schools in Washington State had collected more than 900,000 cans.
