Social Issue: Potential Hazards from Power Outages

Social Marketing Strategy: Single, Simple, Doable Behaviors

Where Sighted:  The City of Mercer Island

On Tuesday, November 19, a severe wind storm, described as a “Bomb Cyclone”, reached Western Washington, resulting in damage and power outages across the region.

A posting on Nextdoor by the City of Mercer Island encouraged several specific protective behaviors.

“Crews continue to work across the Island to restore electricity service and clear dangerous debris
and downed power lines.”

REMEMBER:
❌ Never approach downed power lines (stay 35’ away), do not drive over downed power lines, and never use outdoor gas appliances indoors. ❌
⚠️ Many roads remain closed. Do not drive around barricades. It is unsafe to walk, bike, or recreate in closed roads or areas. Island residents should avoid parks and open spaces due to unknown hazards in these areas. ⚠️
✅ Treat all intersections without power as four-way stops. Come to a complete stop, then proceed slowly when it is your turn. ✅
