Social Issue: Eating Disorders Among Adolescents
A news article described a webinar delivered that week by a registered dietician and nutritionist who wanted to offer “tips” on talking to your child you are concerned may have an eating disorder, and a high school student who wanted to share her story and why the topic of eating disorders was important.
Highlights of the webinar included the following messages related to recommended actions:
- Warning Signs: “Skipping meals, making excuses not to eat; eating secretly or in hiding; and intense fear of gaining weight; a distorted view of one’s body; noticeable up-or-down changes in weight; fatigue, dizziness or fainting and more.”
- Speaking to Your Teen: “You deserve to be a kid, to feel good inside and outside of your body-you really deserve support.”
- Seek Help: “They can take a free and anonymous online screening on the National Eating Disorders Association website.” Local resources were mentioned including a Youth & Family Services confidential phone line or a website.
