One of the most painful moments for me following the New Orleans attack on Jan. 1, 2025, killing 14 people and injuring more was when I learned that the attacker had made his intentions known ahead of time with postings on social media (See story below).
It reminds me of the time I learned that the mass shooter at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022, had sent text messages to a friend sharing that he was going to the “shoot up” at an elementary school. (See story below).
Part of the reason this is so painful is that these shootings might have been prevented if those noticing these posts had used the anonymous app See Something. Say Something. to report what they saw.
“Jabbar initially planned to harm family and friends, FBI says.
Raia said Jabbar posted videos on Facebook as he headed to New Orleans in which he “proclaimed his support for ISIS.”
Raia said there were five videos posted on Jabbar’s Facebook account before the attack. In the first video, Jabbar said he originally planned “to harm his family and friends” but was “concerned the news headlines would not focus on the ‘war between the believers and the disbelievers,’” Raia said.”
“During a news conference on Thursday, the FBI said that it was informed of several videos that Jabbar posted online proclaiming his support for ISIS. In one video, Jabbar explains he originally planned to hurt friends and family, but was concerned the media would not focus on the “war between believers and the disbelievers,” FBI agent Christopher Raia said.”
