Social Marketing Strategy: Distinguishing Social Marketing
Where Sighted: ChatGPT
Social Issue: Understanding of Social Marketing

I “took a chance” today and asked ChatGPT: “What is Social Marketing?”

I was concerned, of course, I would hear all about Social Media.

This response “made me smile.”

“In Short:

Social Marketing is a strategy that applies traditional marketing principles and techniques to influence behaviors that benefit individuals and society as a whole – rather than to sell products for profit.

Instead of promoting a brand or product, social marketing promotes positive behavior change.

The Main Goal is to change behaviors for social good.  Examples include:

  • Quit smoking
  • Wear seatbelts
  • Get vaccinated
  • Recycle
  • Practice safe driving
  • Conserve water

Social marketing is about using marketing to make the world better, by influencing behaviors that improve health, safety, equality, and the environment.

If you’d like, I can also explain how it differs from social media marketing (many people confuse the two).”
