Social Issue: Youth Sexual Assault
At a local community center, a 90-minute program for parents of K-12 children in a local school districted was presented by the prevention services team of a County Sexual Assault Resource Center.
“Moving Beyond Stranger Danger: Personal Safety Conversations for Today’s Youth”
The event was organized after the release of numerous recent news reports regarding alleged sexual misconduct by a pair of former teachers at a local high school, even though occurring years ago. The objective of the program was to inspire future protective conversations for parents to have with their youth.
Specific “behaviors” that were described and recommended were focused on encouraging parents to have ongoing conversations with their youth regarding the topic of sexual assault, including the following “openers”:
- If you “See something. Say Something.”
- If you have information, share it with others.
- Reach out for questions you have and talk it over with people you trust.
The program included a video in which youth confirmed that conversations with these topics would have them “feel heard”, and would “give them a voice.”
