Most of the usual opportunities when Africa grantmakers come together are as part of international or issue-oriented meetings, but AGAG’s annual meeting is one of the rare occasions where a common interest in Africa brings funders together.  In April 2016 representatives of funding organizations, NGO leaders and academics came together at the AGAG Retreat to discuss some the challenges facing African communities and how listening, learning and taking action can help increase the impact of philanthropy  (see the agenda here).

There were many “hot topics” on the agenda including the confluence of social protests and democracy and governance as reflected in the recent student protests in South Africa (@feesmustfall). So, everyone was excited that Professor Adam Habib, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Witswatersrand in South Africa accepted to be the opening dinner speaker.

After the dinner entrees were cleared away, we all settled back over coffee and dessert to listen to the conversation between Prof. Habib and Vuyiswa Sidzumo, Director of the Mott Foundation office in South Africa and AGAG Steering Committee Chair.

Read the Summary of this very informative and engaging conversation.
