Australian Sex Party Makes A Anti-Catholic Jingle

This is about as irreverent as they come.

The Australian Sex Party, which despite its name has a broad civil liberties agenda, recently fired a blasphemous shot across the bow of one of the world’s most powerful religious institutions: The Roman Catholic Church.

If you’re offended by religion-bashing, or are a fan of the reform-minded Pope Francis, you may find this particularly bad. If that’s going to ruin your day, stop reading here.

To the tune of “The Candy Man,” a charismatic priest proudly rattles off the church’s influence on politics and human rights issues such as same-sex marriage and euthanasia, and blames it “on a book and a 2000-year-old Jew.” And it provides singalong lyric captions with a bouncing Pope Francis head.

It’s hilariously nasty, in the vein of Monty Python’s “Every Sperm Is Sacred,” and its anti-Catholic message will certainly give ammo to the folks who see Christianity as a religion under attack. But the serious message, of the influence religious organizations have over politics, is one that needs to be taken seriously. Especially with Donald Trump courting the evangelical vote in the USA.
